Excerpts-
  • From The Text

I figured the red of Romy's hair was no longer entirely natural, and Botox might've been responsible for the smoothness of her face. But she still had a killer body, and that slightly cross-eyed gaze that used to make my knees all wobbly.

"Floyd Hunter, Investigations," she read aloud from the open door to my office. "Wow. You're a real-life gumshoe."

    "What do you want?"

Romy pranced toward the desk and arranged herself on my client chair. Her lime-colored sheath dress, ending way above the knees, was designed to show off her long, smooth, bronzed legs.

    "You're still mad at me."

"I'm not mad at you. I hardly remember you." Seriously, I wouldn't have if I hadn't happened to carry her headshot in my wallet.

"You should've come to the reunion. You were missed. And not just by the girls."

I'd never thought of graduation day as an occasion to remember fondly, so last week's twenty-five-year reunion of Robert F. Kennedy High's class of 1986 had taken place without me.

I cast a demonstrative look at my watch. "I'm expecting a client," I lied. "We'll have to postpone this very stimulating chat until, uh, let's see—never?"

Romy straightened up in the chair, pushing out her breasts. My throat felt dry. I took a sip from the coffee on my desk. It was cold. Tasted like manure.

"I need your help, Floyd. Don't worry, I'll pay you."

"You can pay me a visit; you can pay me heed; you can even pay me homage; but you can't pay me enough to work for you."

She closed her eyes and opened them again, but real slow, as if her eyelashes stuck to the skin. It was one of her tricks.

"I'm being threatened. I need your protection."

She'd always been a drama queen. A quarter century ago, I found it quirky. In a middle-aged woman, it seemed tiresome.

"Call the cops." I pushed my desk phone over to her side of the desk. "Be my guest."

She licked her lips. "The police are out of the question. Please, Floyd. For old times' sake."
